  5. Is there a time-out limit on my connection? If so, is their anyway for me to stop this or get around it?

  Connection Answers:

Why did you slow down my internet connection? I used to connect really fast, but lately its been slow. What gives?

We do not have any control over the speed at which you connect. Our servers allow you to connect at 56kbps, which is the maximum a normal modem can go. The speed at which you connect is dependent on a number of factors. Nathan Garcia from PCWorld.com explains it the best:

"The maximum speed at which you can download data using dial-up networking is limited by the telephone system's analog bandwidth, the line quality, and the Internet traffic load."

http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,48467,00.asp

If you're connecting at a slow speed, your best bet would be to do one of two things:

  1. Call your phone company, and have them run some line tests from your house to our servers.
  2. Change the access number you are using and hope you get a better connection. GLISnet Access Numbers

When I go to connect, I get the message "No Dial Tone." What does this mean?

When you get this message, try checking all the phones in the house to make sure one wasn't left off the receiver or wasn't left on accidently. Also, you may want to try plugging a phone directly into the phone jack to make sure there is nothing wrong with it. If there is something wrong with the wall jack, then you should call the phone company and have them come out to fix it. If there is nothing wrong with the phone jack, then you may want to take your computer to a hardware technician to make sure your modem isn't out of place.

Every time I go to log in, it asks me to verify my password. I keep clicking the "OK" button, but it comes up again. Eventually I just give up. How can I fix this?

Sometimes Windows will either send us a corrupt password or no password at all. When this happens, our servers cannot verify who you are, and thus it continuously asks you for your username and password. When one of these screens comes up, make sure to retype both your username and password. Also, the passwords are case sensitive, so be aware of this when logging in.

If for some reason you try and try, you retype your username and password and it still doesn't work, give our Customer support a call at 1-888-445-4763. They can tell you what our servers are receiving from you, and help you fix the problem.

When I go to log on, my password has FAR to many dots or stars to be my password?

Windows will intentionally mask the length of your password, to help keep your password safe from prying eyes. If you don't feel sure about your password, just retype it.

Is there a time-out limit on my connection? If so, is their anyway for me to stop this or get around it?

GLISnet has an 20 minute idle timeout. Which means if you're connected to GLISnet and there is no activity at your end (like surfing around or checking e-mail), our servers will disconnect you.

  Browser Questions:
  1. I can connect to the internet, but my browser won't go anywhere. What should I do?
  2. Ever since I have connected with you guys, I have gotten all kinds of popups. Why do you guys keep sending me these popups?
  3. How do I change my start-up / homepage page?

  Browser Answers:

I can connect to the internet, but my browser won't go anywhere. What should I do?

The first thing you want to do is turn off you comptuer. By turning off the computer, you are clearing out all the memory, making sure a setting wasn't just getting stuck. You typically want to leave the computer off for at least 30 seconds to a minute.

If restarting the computer doesn't work, then the second thing to check for is if you have any firewalls installed on your system. The most typical ones come usually with Norton Antivirus, McAffee VirusSheild, and Windows XP. To disable them, refer to the documention that came with your product.

If disabling your firewall doesn't seem to help, or you don't have a firewall, then its possible your TCP/IP stack has been corrputed. to fix this, follow these instructions (Windows XP Only):

  1. Click on Start
  2. Click Run
  3. Type cmd
  4. Type netsh int ip reset c:\tcpipreset.txt
  5. Hit Enter
  6. Type exit
  7. Restart your computer.

Screen shots of instructions above. Resetting TCP/IP in Windows XP

If this still does not fix the problem, then your problem goes beyond the scope of this list. You can call our Customer Support at 1-888-445-4763, or take it to a hardware technician. They will generally be able to help fix the problem.

Ever since I have connected with you guys, I have gotten all kinds of popups. Why do you guys keep sending me these popups?

We would never send any of our customers any type of popups. If you receive a lot of popups when you connect the internet, then there is more than likely some SpyWare or Adware on your computer. To remove it, we recommend you download and install one of two programs: SpyBot: Search and Destroy, or Lavasoft Ad-Aware. Both are fine programs which will scan your computer for malicious software, and remove it at your request.

After you've removed all SpyWare, stop using Microsoft Internet Explorer as your browser and use Mozilla Firefox for browsing the internet.

  9. How can I forward my e-mail to a different e-mail address?
  10. How can I add an email address (or multiple email addresses) to the whiteliste?

  E-Mail Answers:

What are the mail server names for GLISnet?

For e-mail addresses ending with @glis.net, both POP3 and SMTP will be mail.glis.net
For e-mail addresses ending with @c3net.net, both POP3 and SMTP will be mail.c3net.net

If you want to connect using an IMAP account, you must use mail.glis.net

How can I check my email when I am not at my computer at home?

If you are away from the computer that normally checks and receives your email, you can view your email by using our web interface. To get to there, go to our homepage (www.glis.net), and on the left hand side, log in with you full email address and password. Here you can compose, send, and receive messages from your account.

I'm trying to download a large e-mail and my e-mail client stalls. Why can't I download it?

Most e-mail clients like Outlook Express can't handle large e-mails.
You my want to try logging into the Web-Mail and try downloading it from there.

After you've successfully downloaded the attachment, you may want the print the e-mail and then delete it from inside the Web-Mail interface.

I can't open attachments in Outlook Express. It says "OE removed access to the following unsafe attachment in your mail".

Go to Outlook Express won't let me open Attachments.
This section explains on how to disable that feature.

Why are you disconnecting me after I check my e-mail?

GLISnet will not disconnect you after you check your email. There is likely a setting in your email client that disconnects you after sending / receiving your emails.

If you are using Outlook Express, you can go to our section listed as "Outlook Express Hangs-Up on me after checking mail".
This section will explain how to disable that feature.

I keep downloading the same e-mails over-and-over again. Why?

If a large email is in your inbox, and you get disconnected before finishing your download / before downloading the rest of your emails, this can occur.

This problem occurs as a result of your email client never having the chance to send the delete command to remove the previously downloaded messages. As a result, your email client will download the same emails multiple times.

You can get around this by going to our website at http://www.glis.net, and logging in to the email section on the left hand side. Once logged in, you can delete any old emails you've previously downloaded, or simply remove the large email that is causing the problem.

How can I change my password for my e-mail address?

To change your password for either your email account or for getting online, we ask that you please contact our customer support. They will be able to change your password, and help you make any and all appropriate changes on your computer for the new password. Our customer support can be reached at 1-888-445-4763.

Re-type your password, and click the "Login" button.

Place a "dot" next to Vacation.
